Setting up the printer for the first time

  • If you’re going to set up a new printer, make sure that you have unpacked it completely.
  • Remove all the protective tapes from the printer.
  • Now, load the ink cartridges or toner cartridges into their slots on your printer. If the toner cartridges and drum unit assembly is pre-installed on your printer, then make sure that you have unpacked and installed it correctly.
  • Now, fill the paper cassette or input/paper tray with a stack of paper that is recommended by your printer manufacturer. Make sure that the tray or cassette is not overloaded.
  • Plug your printer into an electrical outlet and turn it on.
  • Configure the initial printer settings by following the on-screen instructions.
  • If your printer supports the Fax operation and you wish to use it, then configure the fax setup.
  • After completing the printer’s physical setup, install the printer software on your computer to complete the setup.
  • Before the driver installation, make sure that your printer is not connected to the computer.
  • During the software installation, choose the desired connection type and connect the printer to the network.
  • Finally, print, scan, fax, or copy a test page to check whether your printer setup is done correctly.

Five simple steps to install the printer software

  • Insert the setup CD of your printer into your computer. If your computer doesn’t have the disc tray, then download the printer driver from its official support page and open it.
  • Once the printer installer detects your OS type, the driver installation begins automatically.
  • When prompted, choose your printer model, desired connection type, and extra software or utilities that you wish to install on your computer.
  • Similarly, connect your printer and the computer together only when prompted during the driver installation.
  • Once the driver installation is completed, a window titled Print a Test page will appear on the screen. Click on the Print button to check whether the driver installation is done correctly. In case the Print a test page window is not displayed on the screen, then perform a test print manually from your computer to the printer.

Almost all the printer models allow you to scan a document and save its copy on your computer, e-mail, or USB drive.

  • Initially, make sure that you have configured the scan settings.
  • Now, load the original that you want to scan on the scanner glass or in the ADF.
  • Initiate the scan operation on your printer by pressing the Scan button or selecting the Scan option from the Menu list.
  • Choose the destination location, scan type, scan resolution, and other preferences as per your desire.
  • Finally, tap or press the Scan button on the printer.

You can connect a printer to a wireless network using the Wireless Setup wizard or the WPS method.

Using Wireless Setup Wizard

  • Make sure that your printer and the wireless router are turned on.
  • Now, go to your printer’s Wi-Fi Setup screen and choose the Wi-Fi Infrastructure Mode option.
  • Connect your wireless printer to the selected Wi-Fi network by following the instructions displayed on the screen.

Using the WPS method

You can use the Push or PIN method of WPS to connect your printer to the wireless network.

  • From your printer’s Wi-Fi setup screen, select the WPS option.
  • Choose the Push or PIN method of your desire.
  • Now, based on your selection, the corresponding screen will appear on the screen.
  • Connect your Wi-Fi printer to the wireless network by following the prompts displayed on the screen.

On all the printer models, the AirPrint feature is enabled by default. To use this feature, you just need to connect your printer and the Apple device (iPhone or iPad) to the same wireless network. However, for some of the Brother printer models, this feature is disabled. To enable the AirPrint feature on your Brother printer, you can use its Web-Based Management page. The following instructions explain the same.

  • Go to your Brother printer’s Web-Based Management page using its IP address.
  • Now, based on your printer type, the WBM page will open.
  • If a window with two options, AirPrint and Google Cloud Print, is displayed on the screen, click on the AirPrint option and select Enable. Click on the Submit button.
  • Similarly, if your Brother printer model name appears on the screen, click on the Network menu, and select the Protocol option.
  • Check if the AirPrint option is selected. If not, select it, and click Submit to enable the AirPrint feature on your printer.

Paper Jam is one of the common issues encountered by most printer users. The following instructions will help you to fix the paper jam issue on any printer.

  • Initially, restart your printer. If the Paper Jam message is displayed on the screen even after restarting your printer, look for the jammed paper in all important parts of your printer such as input tray, output tray, ADF, scanner glass, etc.
  • Once you find the jammed paper, remove it gently.
  • After removing all the jammed paper, reload the paper in the tray or cassette and print a test page.
  • If the printer performs the print operation successfully, then the Paper Jam issue is cleared.
  • Otherwise, re-check your printer for the jammed paper and remove it.

Basically, the Printer Offline error can be resolved easily.

  • First, make sure that your printer is powered on and connected to the computer.
  • Next, check if the Use Printer Offline or Pause Printing option is enabled on your computer.
  • If yes, disable it and then perform the print operation.
  • Restart your printer and computer.
  • In case the Printer Offline error is displayed on the screen even with the Use Printer Offline or Pause Printing option disabled, then check whether the print operation settings are configured correctly.
  • If not, configure them and perform the print operation.
  • Check for pending print jobs and clear them.
  • Update the printer driver on your computer or reinstall the printer driver and this will fix the offline problem.

  • If your printer is not responding to the print operation, check whether it is turned on.
  • Turn on your printer if it is turned on.
  • Make sure that the printer is set as the default printer on your computer.
  • Reinstall the printer driver if necessary.
  • Restart the printer and the Print Spooler service on your computer.
